GENDER, male
SPECIES, caracal
AGE, 4 years
SEXUALITY, he sho' don't know
APPEARANCE,
Huxley is medium-sized but especially skinny, even for a caracal: looking at him, with his too-long limbs and his oversized paws, the word gangly comes to mind. A young male, he's probably grown to full maturity but he still has that awkward adolescent body.
His fur, a warm russet gold color that fades to a splash of cream along his underside, is short and neat from careful grooming, but it can't hide the many leathery scars that criss-cross his flanks. His head is angular, as is typical of caracals, with a blunt muzzle and deepset dark amber eyes. They're outlined in white rings, giving him a permanently astonished look, and above them reside twin black smudges like a pair of skeptical feline eyebrows.
His ears are, of course, his pride and joy: absurdly large, they perch atop his skull like a pair of curiously triangular birds, as if they're going to fly anyway at any moment. Large, even by his species' standards, and tipped with a plume of silky black hair nearly four inches long, they're highly sensitive and are almost never still: always swiveling and pricking at the slightest noise.
His hindquarters are heavily muscled, as is typical of a caracal, and he uses them for jumping to great heights. His front legs, on the other hand, are as skinny as the rest of him. As a result, Huxley has something of a swinging gait-- a swagger, if you will. He carries his head high and one gets the sense that he would hold his tail aloft if he had one. There's only a scarred stump where it once was, bitten off by a hippo.
PERSONALITY,
Huxley doesn't do anything halfway. He either loves or he hates. He tends to flit from flights of fancy: one month it'll be a certain she-cat, another month it'll be hunting. And he doesn't just think about that material. It consumes him.
To say that Huxley has perseverence is an understatement: he will risk his life to get what he wants. He will lie, cheat, and backstab, all of which he does with a certain amount of panache.
Commitment, therefore, is not his strong suit. There is only one constant in his life: a love of beauty, pure and simple. He values even the simplicity of a flower or a spring morning. He falls in and out of all-engulfing love too often. As a result, he is flighty and just a tiny bit paranoid. He veers away from affection or even warmth from anyone besides his current object of attention.
If one catches him, however, between obsessions-- in that brief window of a few days when he hasn't yet decided on something new to devote himself to-- one could find a reserved, stand-offish cat with a streak of cuttingly dark humor and a barbed tongue. He loves irony and complaining, although he only opens up around the select few he trusts.
Gifted with eloquence, self-pity and vast amounts of pessimism, he spends much of his time bemoaning his fate in the feline equivalent of angsty poetry.
FIRST IMPRESSION, obsessive, determined, self-absorbed, angst-ridden, sardonic
HISTORY,
Huxley was born in the reserve and doesn't know of anything else. He was always prone to flights of fancy, even as a kit: his parents dismissed it as a childish phase he would grow out of. The only survivors of his prematurely-born litter of stillborns were him and his brother, Icarus. He was a sickly kit and he and his brother were spoiled rotten, but started to shy away from his overbearing parents at a young age. He and Icarus grew ever closer, however, and even today, Icarus is one of Huxley's only real friends.
As his friendship grew, his obsessions deepened: he lost his own tail when chasing a particularly alluring butterfly across a pond, and his tail-- and the unfortunate butterfly-- were bitten off by an enraged hippo. It was sheer luck that Huxley survived, but he clearly hasn't learned. Now a young but mature male, he is almost totally estranged from his parents and lives an unstructured life devoted to following his whims.
